SCULPTURE ON THE COAST 2018 -19 / CERFLUN AR Y PROSIECT ARFORDIRC

We are pleased to present our exciting project - a special waymarking sculpture trail along the Gower Coastal Path. This linked with our annual Beach Sculpture Festival and showcases contemporary Welsh arts in an adventurous, inspiring way. The project gives a distinctive cultural visual arts experience for all and encourages active lifestyles. Five site specific sculptures have been created especially for the trail between Mumbles and Rhossili by our team of artists using concepts inspired by the 2018 theme Year of The Sea. The project has been funded via the Welsh Government's Tourism Product Innovation Fund which aims to encourage new innovative product ideas working in partnership which will have a greater impact and attract more visitors. Please scroll down to read the project story which began in September 2017.
Rydym yn falch o gyflwyno ein prosiect cyffrous - llwybr cerfluniau arbennig ar hyd Llwybr Arfordir Gwyr. Bydd hyn yn cyd-fynd â'n Gwyl Cerfluniau Traeth flynyddol ac yn arddangos celfyddydau cyfoes Cymru mewn ffordd llawn antur ac ysbrydoliaeth. Bydd y prosiect yn rhoi profiad celfyddydau gweledol diwylliannol unigryw i bawb ac yn annog ffyrdd actif o fwy
. Caiff pum cerflun eu creu'n arbennig gan ein tîm o artistiaid ar gyfer mannau penodol ar y llwybr rhwng y Mwmbwls a Rhosili. Byddant yn defnyddio cysyniadau a ysbrydolwyd gan thema 2018, sef Blwyddyn y Môr. Mae'r prosiect wedi cael ei ariannu drwy Gronfa Arloesi Cynnyrch Twristiaeth Llywodraeth Cymru sy'n anelu at annog syniadau cynnyrch arloesol newydd trwy weithio mewn partneriaeth er mwyn cael mwy o effaith a denu mwy o ymwelwyr. Shell Sculpture at Three Cliffs Bay by Tina Cunningham

Cerflun cragen ym Mae'r Tri Chlogwyn gan Tina Cunningham

Message from the artist - please visit the work.
It is an interactive work carved from one piece of wood and based on a shell. The reflections inside it represent water inside the caves and rock-pools. The hole is a view finder to capture the three cliffs. I hoped that those that were not able to go all the way to the beach would be able to enjoy the essence of it from the sculpture. The experience of the work is personal, interactive and goes beyond an image. It is a way-marker and had to be substantial due to the cows rubbing up against it - anything else would have been broken off.

Neges gan yr arlunydd - ewch i'r gwaith.
Mae'n waith rhyngweithiol wedi'i cherfio o un darn o bren ac wedi'i seilio ar gregyn. Mae'r adlewyrchiadau y tu mewn iddo yn cynrychioli dwr y tu mewn i'r ogofâu a'r pyllau creigiau. Mae'r twll yn ddarganfyddwr barn i ddal y tri clogwyni. Yr oeddwn yn gobeithio y byddai'r rhai na allant fynd drwy'r ffordd i'r traeth yn gallu mwynhau hanfod y cerflun. Mae profiad y gwaith yn bersonol, yn rhyngweithiol ac yn mynd y tu hwnt i ddelwedd. Mae'n arwydd-ffordd ac roedd yn rhaid iddo fod yn sylweddol oherwydd bod y gwartheg yn rwbio yn ei erbyn - byddai unrhyw beth arall wedi'i dorri i ffwrdd.

YEAR OF THE SEA SCULPTURE ON THE COAST PROJECT UPDATE DECEMBER 2017

The project is progressing - the sites have been chosen for the five way-marking sculptures and the artists' designs have now been made (see below).

Y NEWYDDION DIWEDDARAF AM BROSIECTBLWYDDYN Y MOR MIS LONAWR 2017 CERFLUN AR Y PROSIECT ARFORDIRC
Mae'r prosiect ar waith - mae'r safleoedd wedi'u dewis ar gyfer y pum cerflun â chyfeirbyst ac mae dyluniadau'r artistiaid wedi'u cwblhau (gweler isod).

Fish Sculpture at Limeslade Bay by Ami Marsden

The ever flowing circle of water featuring a large mackerel will be hand carved from local reclaimed oak. The viewfinder it creates at the centre will allow people to focus and observe the ever changing beautiful landscape throughout the seasons. Insets of hand modelled cast aluminium will illustrate the different shells that live in British waters, providing both informative and educational information. Lettering will be carved into the wood to direct walkers to the nearest bay.

Cerflun pysgodyn ym Mae Limeslade gan Ami Marsden
Bydd y cylch o dd?r sy'n llifo am byth sy'n cynnwys macrell mawr wedi'i gerfio â llaw o dderw lleol wedi'i adfer. Bydd y ffenestr y mae'n ei greu yn y canol yn caniatáu i bobl ganolbwyntio ar y tirlun bythol newidiol a'i weld drwy'r tymhorau. Bydd mewnosodiadau wedi'u modelu â llaw o alwminiwm wedi'i gastio yn esbonio'r gwahanol gregyn sy'n byw yn nyfroedd Prydain, sy'n darparu gwybodaeth ddefnyddiol ac addysgiadol.Bydd llythreniad yn cael ei gerfio yn y pren er mwyn cyfeirio cerddwyr i'r bae agosaf.

Surfboard sculptures at Caswell Bay by Ami Marsden
A dynamic set of three surfboard inspired pieces will stand either side of a bench on the cliff path from Caswell to Langland. These will have a variety of textures within the form of a flowing current connecting all the pieces together. Dark charred waves will contrast the shawl of metal fish and the warm colour of the oiled oak. Hand carving will illustrate the directions to both beaches and insets of hand modelled cast aluminium will illustrate the different shells that live in British waters.

Cerfluniau byrddau syrffio ym Mae Caswell gan Ami Marsden
Bydd tri cherflun wedi'u hysbrydoli gan fyrddau syrffio deinamig yn cael eu gosod naill ochr i fainc ar lwybr y clogwyn o Caswell i Langland. Bydd gan y rhain amrywiaeth o weadau ar ffurf cerrynt sy'n llifo gan gysylltu'r holl ddarnau â'i gilydd. Bydd tonnau tywyll yn cyferbynnu â'r haig o bysgod metel a lliw cynnes y derw wedi'i oelio. Bydd y cerfiad â llaw yn esbonio cyfeiriad y ddau draeth a bydd mewnosodiadau o alwminiwm wedi'i gastio'n esbonio'r gwahanol gregyn sy'n byw yn nyfroedd Prydain.

Shell Sculpture at Three Cliffs Bay by Tina Cunningham
Based on a whelk shell to work with the landscape complimenting the location. The shell is carved from one piece of wood, including the 'plinth'. There is a view finder in the back of the shell which can be fixed to a chosen view. Also, an aluminium mirror inside the shell acting as a 'rock pool' reflecting light and a spiral. The rock pool overflows into the spiral 'logo' on the front of the sculpture. At the base of the carved shell the 'cast' shells are fixed. The plinth will have arrows slowly changing into birds (gulls) pointing and flying towards the path that takes you to the beach with Three Cliffs Bay carved into it.

Cerflun cragen ym Mae'r Tri Chlogwyn gan Tina Cunningham
Wedi'i selio ar gragen gwichiad moch gyda'r tirlun yn cyd-fynd â'r lleoliad. Mae'r gragen wedi'i cherfio o un darn o bren, gan gynnwys y 'plinth'. Mae yna ffenestr ar gefn y gragen y gellir ei gosod ar olygfa ddewisol. Hefyd, mae drych alwminiwm y tu mewn i'r gragen yn ymddwyn fel 'pwll trai', yn adlewyrchu golau a throell. Mae'r pwll trai'n llifro i'r 'logo' troell ar flaen y cerflun. Ar waelod y gragen wedi'i cherfio mae'r cregyn wedi'u 'castio' wedi'u gosod. Bydd gan y plinth saethau sy'n

Surf/windsurf Arch Sculpture at Horton Bay by Sara Holden
The carved wooden arch will be erected at the start of the footpath marking the way to the beach at Horton. Based on water sport activities popular at this beach, one side of the arch will depict a windsurfer and the other a surfer with wave form designs also carved as a mirror image on both sides. The words Traeth and Beach will also be carved into the arch and some cast local shells plus spiral logo will be embedded into the sculpture. The arch is created from one curved piece Oak wood split in two to create the mirrored sides.

Cerflun o fwa syrffio/hwylfyrddio ym Mae Horton gan Sara Holden
Bydd y bwa pren wedi'i gerfio'n cael ei godi ar ddechrau'r llwybr troed sy'n marcio'r ffordd i'r traeth yn Horton. Yn seiliedig ar weithgareddau chwaraeon dwr poblogaidd y traeth hwn, bydd un ochr o'r bwa'n darlunio hwylfyrddwr a bydd yr ochr arall yn darlunio syrffiwr, gyda dyluniadau ar ffurf ton hefyd wedi'u cerfio sy'n adlewyrchu ar y ddwy ochr. Bydd y geiriau 'Traeth' a 'Beach' hefyd yn cael eu cerfio ar y bwa a bydd cregyn lleol wedi'u castio a'r logo troell yn cael eu mewnosod yn y cerflun. Mae'r bwa wedi'i wneud o un darn o dderw crwm wedi'i rannu'n ddau er mwyn creu'r ochrau sy'n adlewyrchu ei gilydd.

White Horse Sculpture at Rhossili Bay by Sara Holden
The carved oak piece will depict "a white horse", a poetic description of the surf, to reflect the power and beauty of the waves at Rhossili, a popular surfing spot on Gower. The racing horse and waves will be carved into the way marking sign with text Traeth and Beach pointing to the beach path. Insets of cast shells and spiral logo will be embedded into the design.

Cerflun ceffyl gwyn ym Mae Rhosili gan Sara Holden
Bydd y darn o dderw wedi'i gerfio'n darlunio "ceffyl gwyn", disgrifiad barddol o frig y don, er mwyn adlewyrchu pwer a phrydferthwch tonnau Rhosili, lleoliad syrffio poblogaidd ym Mhenrhyn G?yr. Bydd y ceffyl rasio a'r tonnau'n cael eu cerfio i'r arwydd â chyfeirbost, gyda'r geiriau 'Traeth' a 'Beach' yn wynebu tuag at lwybr y traeth. Bydd mewnosodiadau'r cregyn wedi'u castio a'r logo troell yn cael eu gosod yn y dyluniad.

The next stage will be creating the sculptures and we will be updating this page with progress photographs of their construction together with words from the artists about the process.

Y cam nesaf yw creu'r cerfluniau a byddwn yn diweddaru'r dudalen hon gyda lluniau o'r gwaith cynnydd wrth iddynt gael eu hadeiladu, ynghyd â geiriau gan yr artistiaid ynghylch y broses.

The special sculpture trail along the coastal path will educate, involve, inspire and motivate people of all ages, abilities and cultures from both the tourism and community sectors. Our aim is to showcase the beauty and diversity of the Welsh coastal sea and landscapes by encouraging people to discover, view and explore Gower using the interconnecting coastal path with its stunning views and breath-taking proximity to the ocean. Through creating this special sculpture trail, we wish to bring visual arts into the public domain making it possible for everyone to have the opportunity to understand, enjoy, and actively engage with the arts. We anticipate that that this will be an exciting, interesting, thought provoking, adventurous project. As a major cultural feature in the Wales Tourist calendar, it will inspire visitors to visit beautiful Wales and take part in our fantastic open air event. The project will incorporate educational, adventurous, fun and discovery aspects with a trail quiz that can be solved by following the sculpture trail map and revealing the secrets behind the artworks. This inspiring activity will give the opportunity for everyone to enjoy a healthy and fit lifestyle as they enjoy beautiful scenery and engage with culture and history along the trail. The sculptures will be placed on different places along the coastal path so people could follow the trail over several days if they wish, leisurely stopping off at various points to visit the many lovely Gower beaches or other scenic beauty spots. The trail will link in with our annual Beach Sculpture Festival which will be run for the fourteenth year in July 2018 at various beaches on Gower, including Bracelet Bay, Caswell, Oxwich and Port Eynon. As the project unfolds, we will be posting all new developments and details about the sculpture trail including designs and the proposed locations on this website and also on our social media pages.
Bydd y llwybr cerfluniau arbennig ar hyd llwybr yr arfordir yn addysgu, yn cynnwys, yn ysbrydoli ac yn ysgogi pobl o bob oed, gallu a diwylliant o'r sector twristiaeth a chymunedau. Ein nod yw arddangos harddwch ac amrywiaeth môr a thirweddau arfordirol Cymru drwy annog pobl i ddarganfod, gweld ac archwilio penrhyn Gwyr gan ddefnyddio llwybr cydgysylltiol yr arfordir, a'i olygfeydd trawiadol a'i agosrwydd syfrdanol i'r môr. Drwy greu'r llwybr cerfluniau arbennig hwn, rydym am gyflwyno'r celfyddydau gweledol i'r cyhoedd, a'i gwneud yn bosib i bawb gael y cyfle i ddeall, mwynhau a mynd ati i ymwneud â'r celfyddydau. Rydym yn gwerthfawrogi y bydd hyn yn brosiect cyffrous, diddorol, anturus a fydd yn ysgogi meddwl. Fel nodwedd ddiwylliannol bwysig yng nghalendr twristiaeth Cymru, bydd yn ysbrydoli ymwelwyr i ymweld â Chymru hardd a chymryd rhan yn ein digwyddiad awyr agored gwych. Bydd y prosiect yn cynnwys agweddau addysgol, anturus, difyr a darganfod ynghyd â chwis llwybr y gellir ei ddatrys drwy ddilyn map y llwybr cerfluniau a datgelu'r cyfrinachau y tu ôl i'r gweithiau celf. Bydd y gweithgaredd ysbrydolus hwn yn rhoi'r cyfle i bawb fwynhau ffordd iach a heini o fyw wrth iddynt fwynhau golygfeydd hardd ac ymwneud â diwylliant a hanes ar hyd y llwybr. Caiff y cerfluniau eu gosod mewn mannau gwahanol ar hyd llwybr yr arfordir fel y gall pobl ddilyn y llwybr dros sawl diwrnod os dymunant, gan aros yn hamddenol mewn mannau amrywiol i ymweld â thraethau hardd niferus penrhyn Gwyr neu fannau golygfaol eraill. Bydd y llwybr yn cysylltu â'n Gwyl Cerfluniau Traeth flynyddol a gaiff ei chynnal am y bedwaredd flwyddyn ar ddeg ym mis Gorffennaf 2018, gan gynnwys Bae Bracelet, Casawell, Oxwich a Phorth Einon. Wrth i'r prosiect fynd rhagddo, byddwn yn postio'r holl ddatblygiadau newydd a manylion am y llwybr cerfluniau, gan gynnwys dyluniadau a lleoliadau arfaethedig, ar ein gwefan a hefyd ar ein gwe-dudalennau cyfryngau cymdeithasol.
